The 'Polyworking' Guide: How to Work Two Remote Jobs (Without Getting Caught)

LeonIT Team

Is it ethical? Maybe not. Is it profitable? Yes. Here is the tactical guide to 'Overemployment'—including the hardware, legal risks, and tax setups you need to know.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer. This is not legal advice. If you get fired, don't blame me.

In 2021, it was a secret. In 2025, it is an open secret. "Polyworking"—also known as Overemployment (OE)—is the practice of working two full-time remote jobs (J1 and J2) simultaneously. The goal isn't to work 80 hours a week. The goal is to work 40 hours a week, but efficiently enough to deliver results for two companies. Why do it? Financial Velocity. A senior developer making $150k at J1 and $140k at J2 is suddenly earning $290k/year. Here is how the pros do it without burning out or getting caught.

The Scenario

You have J1. You finish your work by 11 AM. You spend the rest of the day playing video games. You realize: "I am selling my time for free." You get J2. Now, at 10 AM, you have a meeting for J1. At 10:15 AM, you have a standup for J2. Panic sets in. You need a system.

The Old Way vs. The New Way

The old way was "Moonlighting" (working nights). The new way is "Parallel Processing" (working days).

Feature Moonlighting Polyworking (OE)
Hours 9 AM - 5 PM (J1) + 6 PM - 10 PM (J2). 9 AM - 5 PM (J1 + J2).
Burnout High. Low (if done right).
Income 1.5x Salary. 2x - 3x Salary.
Risk Low. High (Termination).
Hardware One Laptop. Two Laptops + KVM Switch.

1. The "Hardware Firewall" Rule

Rule #1: Never cross the streams.

  • Two Laptops: Never check J2 email on your J1 laptop. IT departments track traffic. If they see traffic to a competitor's Outlook server, you are flagged.
  • The KVM Switch: Use a KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) switch. This allows you to use one monitor/keyboard for two laptops. Click a button to switch contexts.
  • Physical Mute Button: Buy a microphone with a hardware mute button. The nightmare is unmuting yourself in a J1 meeting and having them hear your J2 boss talking.

2. The "Calendar Defense" System

The biggest risk is the Double Meeting. The Strategy:

  1. Block Focus Time: Block 12 PM - 4 PM on both calendars as "Deep Work."
  2. The "Async" Excuse: If a conflict happens, decline one. "I have a conflict, but I'll post my update in Slack beforehand."
  3. Reclaim.ai: Use a tool to sync availability between calendars without revealing details.

3. The "Mediocrity" Mindset

This is hard for high-performers. To succeed at OE, you must be a "B+" Player.

  • "A" Players get promoted. Promotions mean more meetings and visibility. You don't want that.
  • "B" Players are reliable but invisible. They do the work and go home. Goal: Be boring. Be reliable. Be invisible.

4. The "Data Freeze" (The Background Check)

Recruiters use "The Work Number" (Equifax) to see your employment history. If J2 runs a check and sees you are still "Active" at J1, you are busted. The Fix: Call Equifax and Freeze your Work Number. This forces recruiters to ask for paystubs (which you can provide selectively) instead of seeing your entire history.

5. The Tax Setup (LLC vs. W2)

If you have two W2 jobs, the IRS knows. The Pro Move:

  • J1: W2 (Keep the health insurance).
  • J2: Contract (C2C) via your own LLC.
  • Why: It separates your income streams. Plus, you can write off your home office and KVM switch as business expenses.

The Real Numbers

Is the risk worth it?

Scenario Annual Income Tax Rate (Est) Net Pay
One Job $150,000 24% ~$114,000
Two Jobs $300,000 32% ~$204,000

You almost double your take-home pay. That pays off a mortgage in 5 years instead of 30.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is it illegal? A: Usually no (in the US). It is a breach of contract, so you can be fired. But you won't go to jail (unless you work for the Government or a Competitor).

Q: What about LinkedIn? A: Hibernate it. You cannot have a public profile. Tell people you are "taking a social media detox."

Q: What if I get caught? A: You get fired. But you still have the other job. That is the beauty of redundancy.

Q: Can I do this with 3 jobs? A: Some do. But that is where burnout happens. Stick to 2 until you master the system.
