Which ATS Does Your Target Company Use? Workday vs Greenhouse vs Lever (2026) - Hero Background

Which ATS Does Your Target Company Use? Workday vs Greenhouse vs Lever (2026)

You're applying to 20 companies and treating them all the same. That's a mistake. The ATS your target company uses determines whether you get a candidate portal, what silence actually means, and whether a rejection email is ever coming.

Knowing the platform changes your entire follow-up strategy.

The Short Version

Different ATS systems = completely different candidate experiences. Workday gives you a portal you can check. Lever gives you nothing. Greenhouse sends rejection emails more reliably than any other platform. Knowing which one you're dealing with tells you how to track your application, when to follow up, and when silence is a signal — not just a delay.

Why This Matters

The application black hole isn't random. It's a feature of specific platforms. Workday's status labels are deliberately vague. Lever has no candidate-facing portal at all. Greenhouse pipelines tend to move faster and communicate more. iCIMS portals lag behind recruiter actions by days.

Same job market. Very different experiences depending on who built the software.

How to Instantly Identify a Company's ATS

Before checking any list, you can spot the ATS yourself in under 60 seconds.

Method 1 — Look at the careers URL. This is the fastest tell:

  • myworkdayjobs.com → Workday
  • boards.greenhouse.io or job-boards.greenhouse.io → Greenhouse
  • jobs.lever.co → Lever
  • icims.com → iCIMS
  • jobs.ashbyhq.com → Ashby
  • smartrecruiters.com/jobs → SmartRecruiters
  • taleo.net → Taleo

Method 2 — Check the application form footer. Most ATS platforms put their branding at the bottom of the job application page. Scroll all the way down before you apply.

Method 3 — Google it. Search [company name] ATS or [company name] greenhouse OR lever OR workday. Reddit threads, Blind posts, and career forums surface this constantly.

Note: Some large companies use different ATS platforms by region, business unit, or role type. Where dual platforms are confirmed, both are listed.

What Each ATS Actually Means for Your Application

Workday

You have a portal at myworkdayjobs.com. Check it — but not obsessively. Status changes are real signals. "Under Consideration" means you're still alive. "No Longer Under Consideration" is a rejection. Don't wait for an email; it may never come. Workday powers HR operations for over 10,500 organizations worldwide, so you'll be dealing with this one a lot.

Greenhouse

You get a MyGreenhouse account. Statuses are intentionally vague — "Application Received" can sit for weeks without meaning much. Rejection emails are more likely here than on any other major ATS. Check your spam folder; Greenhouse notifications frequently land there. If you haven't heard in 3-4 weeks, it's usually dead.

Lever

No candidate portal. At all. You will learn everything via email or silence. There is no status page to refresh. Follow up directly with your recruiter at the 4-week mark if you've heard nothing. The absence of a portal is a feature of the platform, not a technical issue.

iCIMS

A portal exists, but it lags behind actual recruiter actions by 48-72 hours. Trust emails over portal status. "Reviewed: Not Selected" is final — it won't change. iCIMS is common in healthcare, retail, and logistics.

Taleo

Legacy platform. Clunky. Status labels like "Process Complete" and "Not Retained" are rejections. The portal may update before any email goes out. Fortune 500 adoption has been declining steadily, but Boeing, some financial institutions, and older enterprise organizations still run it.

Ashby

The fastest-growing ATS in tech startups. Minimal candidate portal, but rejection communication is generally prompt. If you're applying to high-growth startups or VC-backed companies, you'll start seeing Ashby URLs frequently (jobs.ashbyhq.com).

SmartRecruiters

Candidate portal exists and is more informative than most. Rejection emails are sent consistently. Visa is the most prominent tech company currently on this platform.

Proprietary Systems (Big Tech)

Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple built their own recruiting infrastructure. They all have candidate portals — bookmark the URL after you apply. They all send rejection emails (Apple is the slowest and least consistent). Amazon's referral program is embedded in their system and carries significant weight.
